MALIGNANT MESOTHELIOMA

Malignant Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that affects the thin cell wall lining of the body’s internal organs and structures. This lining is called the mesothelium.

Malignant mesothelioma has three known varieties. They are malignant pleural mesothelioma, pericardial mesothelioma malignant peritoneal mesothelioma. Pleural mesothelioma occurs in the lining of the lung pleura. Peritoneal mesothelioma occurs in the peritoneum, the lining of the abdominal cavity. And pericardial mesothelioma occurs in the chimney wall, known as the pericardium.

How is Malignant Mesothelioma Treated?
Prognosis Malignant mesothelioma is poor, as is often the disease is diagnosed in its later stages, after symptoms have appeared. However, there are several treatment options for the management of cancer. These include chemotherapy mesothelioma, radiotherapy and surgical removal. Techniques of chemotherapy and radiation therapy are more likely to be, but surgery is often not an option for those whose disease is diagnosed early.

Malignant Mesothelioma, More aggressive treatments are now possible with mesothelioma diagnosed in its early stages. For example, extrapleural pneumonectomy is now possible in many of pleural mesothelioma in patients who are considered eligible for aggressive surgery. Extrapleural pneumonectomy involves removal of the entire affected lung, pericardium, pleura and diaphragm. Malignant Mesothelioma, Patients who are eligible for an aggressive surgery such as extrapleural pneumonectomy, there are much more favorable prognosis than those diagnosed with advanced disease and does not work. However, there are treatment options for most patients with mesothelioma. Cocktails of chemotherapy, such as the use of Alimta ® in combination with cisplatin as well as many other clinical studies provide mesothelioma patients the ability to slow the progression of the disease and prolong survival.

Malignant pleural mesothelioma
Malignant pleural mesothelioma is the most common is mesothelioma and mesothelial membrane that surrounds the lungs and chest cavity. Peritoneal Mesothelioma

Pericardial Mesothelioma
Pericardial mesothelioma is one of the rarest of all known cancers and is responsible for less than 10% of all diagnosed with mesothelioma. Pericardial Mesothelioma occurs in the mesothelial lining of the heart. Mesothelioma of the pericardium, as well as pleural and peritoneal varieties, which are related to exposure to asbestos.
